The saying "once in a blue
moon" refers to something that's exceedingly rare.
There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, but it is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science. The next blue moon won't happen until July

2015.
A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days, while the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days, so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare.
The moon actually won't be coloured blue, but sometimes the moon has a blueish tinge because of smoke or volcanic ash particles suspended in the atmosphere.
